Health, risk behavior, and use of addictive substances among physicians – results of an online survey.

23% of German doctors consume dangerous amounts of alcohol. This was the result of a scientific online survey. Physicians who themselves tended to consume hazardous amounts of alcohol also differed in their counseling patterns.

Regardless of the field of study, they rarely or never advised their patients to abstain from narcotics (surgical: 56%, nonsurgical: 32%), compared with physicians without risky alcohol use. Hazardous drinking is defined as consuming an amount of alcohol that increases the risk of harmful consequences to the user or others. Harmful drinking, on the other hand, is associated with actual physical or psychological harm.
