Efficacy of gabapentin for the treatment of alcohol use disorders in patients with alcohol withdrawal symptoms

Is gabapentin effective in treating alcohol use disorders in adults with a history of alcohol withdrawal symptoms?

In this randomized clinical trial, gabapentin significantly increased the number of people with complete abstinence and reduced alcohol consumption compared with placebo. This effect was most significantly observed in people with more severe alcohol withdrawal symptoms before treatment – 41% of participants with severe alcohol withdrawal symptoms showed total abstinence with gabapentin, compared with 1% of participants in the placebo group.

This study demonstrated that gabapentin promotes abstinence and effectively reduces alcohol use in individuals with alcohol use disorder, and particularly in those with more alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
