The heavy metal chromium is an essential trace element for the human body. A healthy adult needs less than one milligram per day. Chromium is of particular importance for carbohydrate metabolism and is jointly responsible for the adequate release of insulin. It also plays an important role in thyroid function and protein synthesis.
When quitting alcohol, chromium is especially important because it helps keep blood sugar levels steady. Blood sugar fluctuations are not needed at all, especially during the first period without alcohol, because they increase the risk of relapse enormously.
Symptoms of chromium deficiency can include:
Nervousness
Irritability
Confusion
Depression
Lack of concentration
polyuria (excessive urination)
Weight loss
Itching
Muscle weakness
