Amino acids are the components of life that make up proteins. Amino acids are found in all living organisms.
A distinction is made between essential amino acids, which the body cannot build itself and which must therefore be ingested with food, and non-essential amino acids, which the body can in principle build itself, but which usually require other amino acids.
