The role of GABA in anxiety disorders

< 1 min read

Anxiety arises from and maintains dysregulation of neurobiological systems, but the precise mechanisms of anxiety disorders are still only partially understood. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter known to counterbalance the action of the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate.

Several pharmacological agents target the GABA system and modulate the overall action of GABA. This article highlights several neurobiological interactions involved in anxiety and reviews selected studies on plasma neurosteroid levels, plasma GABA levels, and benzodiazepine binding site sensitivity and density in patients with anxiety disorders.
