USA: Mothers with infants drank 300 percent more in Corona times

The Corona crisis period was particularly stressful for mothers with small children – many of them therefore reached for the glass particularly often, American researchers have found out. A whopping 325 percent more alcohol was consumed by women with children under the age of five who were alone at home with them.

“Women are more inclined to drink alcohol to cope with stress, depression or anxiety, and these are all natural reactions to the Covid 19 pandemic,” explains the Caroline Barbosa, one of the scientists at the research institute RTI International.

This heavy drinking still puts women far above the average figures, which are scary in their own right: Americans drank about a third more alcohol during Corona. That’s true across the board, so to speak. Slightly more affected were men of color, but essentially the same was true for all: three wines or beers instead of two.
